Shakerag is the northeast corner of Johns Creek, where the city meets Forsyth County and the Chattahoochee River. It is one of the eight Community Areas in the city’s comprehensive plan, which describes wooded country roads and fields next to subdivisions, and calls it one of the earliest parts of metro Atlanta to be settled and the last part of the city to feel development pressure. OpenStreetMap marks Shake Rag as a named place here.

Where it is

The comprehensive plan’s Shakerag chapter describes the area as bounded on the north by Forsyth County, on the east by the Chattahoochee River, on the south by Bell and Boles Roads and on the west by Tech Park. The city’s map layer puts it at about 3,303 acres. The plan counts 9,288 residents in 2022.

History in the plan: a Native American town site, Suwanee Old Town, appears on early maps. After an 1818 treaty moved the Cherokee Nation’s border to this stretch of the river, ferry owners and farmers settled here, among them John Rogers; his home and his son William Rogers’ home still stand in Shakerag. The settlement of Sheltonville, nicknamed Shakerag, grew after gold was found in the 1840s and prospectors panned Cauley Creek. The plan says the area has the largest number of historic properties in the city.

Fire Station 62 serves the area. Woodward Academy, a private school, has a campus here, the plan says.

Of the area’s 3,462 address points in the school district’s map data, 72% are in ZIP code 30097 and 28% in 30024. Mailing addresses often read “Duluth” or “Suwanee,” but the area is inside Johns Creek city limits, so the city provides police, fire and road services.

Schools

Of the 3,462 address points in this area in the Fulton County Schools map data on Oct. 5, all are zoned for one middle and one high school. Scores are 2025 College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) figures from the state’s School Grades report; the state average was 76.9 for high schools.

Level School Share of addresses 2025 CCRPI
High Northview High (report card) 100% 98.5
Middle River Trail Middle (report card) 100% 96.3
Elementary Shakerag Elementary (report card) Most 99.3
Elementary Wilson Creek Elementary (report card) Part 99.4

On the district’s 2025-26 zone map, Shakerag Elementary covers about four fifths of the area and Wilson Creek the rest, so check the exact address. Shakerag Elementary, at 10885 Rogers Circle, and River Trail Middle, at 10795 Rogers Circle, are inside the area, according to the federal NCES directory.
